The temple is a partly rock-cut and partly free-standing terraced structure. during the Graeco-Roman Period (332 BCE - CE 395) the temple became a centre for healing and the upper terrace was consecrated to Imhotep. Numerous graffiti are evidence of the large number of invalids who visited it until the second century CE.
